Stamperland 2001s **friendly match***

Cambuslang FA Reds 2

After having my integrity as a coach being questioned over the authenticity of our line up, we started with more or less a full squad for the start of this one and just had to put into practice all the hard work the boys have put in in training over recent weeks. We really held our own in the first half as with the previous game but just couldn’t take our chances, and Cambuslang got one chance and finished it.

Second half we lost a second goal towards the end with right good goal kick going deep into our half and the striker getting a better run than our defence and that was game done. Overall a good day at the office for me rather than the boys as the 5/6 boys who don’t get much game time let me see what they need to work on moving forward as they develop.

First time I’ve also seen the boys show a bit of passion on the park as it started to get a bit heated towards the end of the game and with James breaking through and 3 of the opposition having a go at him and nothing being done by the ref! His frustration came through and as he came towards the touch line I was standing at and there was only going to be one outcome as he went to ground. This then boiled over at the other side as well with one of the Cambuslang boys being shown a straight red also.

So for the record folks, It’s not my style to draft in players from our sister 2nd division side. I know some teams often dabble in this practice but who wins in these situations? It’s not the team and it’s certainly not the boys who are swept aside to make way for such tactics. In league games 3 points are 3 points but in friendlies there are no points to pick up and as coaches we should use such games as an opportunity to try out that new set piece we have practiced on the training ground, to play boys in different positions or like we did today, give our players who are still working hard to get a regular slot on the team sheet on a weekly basis some much prized, valuable game time! A level playing field is just that, and that is all we can hope for in this good old game!
